Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My English class is a place where students are exposed to current issues that impact society. They are then challenged to speak and write about these issues in an articulate and academic way. In my classroom learning takes place through reading and writing, as well as through small and large group discussion about issues including the juvenile justice system, the business behind our food system, and cultural stereotypes.
My students are a diverse group.
Nearly 500 of the 1650 students at SHHS attend on a permit from their own school.
They bring with them valuable experiences and perspectives that add depth, insight, and value to the social issues we explore in my classroom.
environment that allows for connection and communication in order for the students to learn from and grow with one another.
My Project
Last year, with the help of Donors Choose, I was able to start a classroom library. While twelve books might not seem like much it sparked a reading revolution in my classroom! This year my book cart is frequently empty, I have a waiting list for the most popular novels, and students consistently ask if I will be getting any new books soon. My students love for reading modern young adult literature has encouraged me to return to Donors Choose and start this project.
I hope to add twenty books to my classroom library that expands my students' access to novels, non-fiction, and poetry written by modern writers that address the issues that are most important to my students.
These books are a necessity for my classroom because they not only cultivate a life-long love of reading but they also increase their vocabulary, challenge their thinking, and help them become better writers.
My students' growing love of reading has inspired me to grow my classroom library. With your help, we can put books in the hands of teens who are waiting for something interesting, relevant, and powerful to read.
