I have a classroom of twenty-seven fifth-grade students who love to learn new things. Over 27% of my students have learning and/or behavioral disabilities. I need to keep their attention by varying the activities in and out of the classroom. Our small southern Indiana school is a school-wide Title I facility in which funds are limited. Close to 300 students attend our elementary school. We have seventeen classrooms of children. 67% of our students received free and reduced breakfast, lunch, and book fees. Our school works hard to offer many additional after-school opportunities for our K-5 students like Green Thumbs, Running Club, and Drama Club.
My Project
Our school is working hard growing their orchard and two gardens for the children's learning and nourishment. Now, we would like to work on enhancing the gardens by growing our seeds, seedlings, and plants quicker.
The students have learned a wealth of information about gardening over the years.
Now, they would like to learn about grow lights and their effects on seeds, seedlings, and plants. These plants will then be put it to good use for a good cause-their school fruit orchard and vegetable gardens. Students also learn financial lessons by selling their plants at the local Farmers Market. They use their raised money on items for the garden. Students and their families come and weed, water, and harvest from the fruit orchard and vegetable gardens throughout the summer and fall for free. Help my students grow even GREENER quicker!!
