My students live in a poverty stricken region that is highly affected by drug use and unemployment. These adverse conditions have landed over half of my students in a foster home or in relative placement. This creates a stressful home life as families struggle to cope.
Despite these situations, my students come to school everyday ready to learn.
they come in every morning asking about what we are going to do for the day, they are excited to be at school where they are safe and loved.
My Project
These new science materials will provide my students with new ways to explore and investigate. In my class room, we love to look at things in new ways and encourage our students to view things from perspectives.
Providing young learners with various scientific tools, such as an ant farm, encourage their creative thinking as well as their concept development.
This is a fundamental part of building a solid foundation in their education.
Science is an area that is lacking focus in many classrooms. By providing our students with science journals it would allow them an opportunity to write or draw their own thoughts or experiments as well as recreate science experiments that they have already complete.
Our students are have limited exposure to science activities in our community, these materials will be a fun and new way to introduce science ideas and help them carry the concepts over and make real life connections outside of school.
Materials such as the ant factory and the ultimate habitat will allow our students to experience life cycles and natural habitats inside of our classroom. This is also something that will encourage critical thinking skills and support development!
