Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Special Education teacher, currently, I teach Reading, Language Arts, Credit Recovery, and Study Skills to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders.

My students love to learn, they want all of the same opportunities as their peers, they just need some extra supports.

Like all high schoolers, they have the drive to get to the end and take the next steps into adulthood. The students I teach and that I am responsible for are some of the hardest-working kids I have been around. They know that the end goal of graduation takes hard work and dedication. They are willing to put forth the extra effort to get there.

My Project

These materials will be used to let the students participate in "book clubs" like their general education peers. We have not been able to have book clubs in resource classes because of a lack of materials that are accessible to the students reading levels. By having sets of graphic novels, the students will be able to participate in book clubs, like the general education Language Arts classes. The easel pads, pens, and various items will be used for whole group and small group instruction.

In resource classes, we do a lot of small and large group work to allow everyone to access information on their level.

These materials will help us close the gap created by pandemic-related learning losses. Being able to engage as groups and differentiate in small groups will allow us to reach students and establish relationships with our students. When we establish positive relationships, students are more likely to come to us when they are feeling unsuccessful and this allows us to close the gap even further.

The graphic novels will be used for group clubs so the students can participate in book clubs like their same-age general education peers. The easel pads, sticky notes, markers, and pens allow us to participate in lessons non-traditionally and there is a high level of engagement when the students have to get up and move around to answer questions or share information. The dyslexia assistance materials help students focus on small pieces of text while they are reading, instead of getting lost in a sea of words! The ACT book will be used to guide ACT preparation lessons for our Juniors, even the Juniors that are in resource classes take the ACT.
