A space of my own! A colorful rug with individual squares helps students be attentive listeners and engage in child development activities. A roomy rug gives us learning space for group work, reading, math games and music and movement so learning can be more child-centered and fun.
We are a classroom with 30 very active Kindergarten students.
Our diverse group is in a public Dual Immersion program in California. Students are learning in two languages, Spanish and English. In addition, this classroom teaches enrichment in Language Arts to 30 students from other teachers daily.
My Project
Our wiggly bunch of 30 is learning how to use personal space, boundaries and focus without being distracted during whole group lesson time. Self-management leads to attentive listening and skills essential in Kindergarten. The assignable squares serve for small groups work. Students listen to literature, focus on a target lesson, read books or Tag Readers and put math puzzles together. Rug space allows child development activities such as music and movement or some area for students to just sprawl out during a rainy day recess. Thirty additional students from other classes will use this rug for strategies in English Language Development.

A rug with assignable squares can be an effective tool to provide effective instruction. Self-management leads to less frequent behavior redirection during whole class and small group work.
A new rug will improve our class environment for our youngest students who sometimes just can't sit at a desk all day. It will allow child development based activities that will give students wiggle room in the class.
