My Students
As a teacher at a Title I school in an inner-city neighborhood in Florida, teaching effectively with limited resources has proven challenging. Over 94 percent of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch. I witness several difficulties that my scholars should not have to face including adversities in and out of the classroom, some of which include unique obligations that make it difficult to give school their all. Despite this truth, I am actively advocating for my scholars because I know their potential and I am committed to helping them realize it!
These scholars are authentic, clever, kind and deserve an education as amazing as they are!
My students will realize the importance of science in the real world through project-based learning, collaborative exercises, and applications to current societal events. I expect these scholars to make their education a priority and I will do the same for them. As I tell them, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela)"
My Project
Studies find that youth benefit from learning mindfulness in terms of improved cognitive outcomes, social-emotional skills, and well being. These benefits have the potential to lead to long-term improvements in life. For example, social skills in schools predict improved education, employment, crime, substance abuse and mental health outcomes in adulthood.
When teachers learn mindfulness, they not only reap personal benefits such as reduced stress and burnout but their schools do as well!
Teachers who learned mindfulness reported greater efficacy in doing their jobs and had more emotionally supportive classroom and better classroom organization based on independent observations. The books I requested will give me the additional resources necessary to implement effective mindfulness strategies in my classroom. They will also give me context behind the community I teach in and the outside factors effecting my students and their education.
