My students need a variety of shoelace designs to choose from, such as neon, rainbow, and assorted colors, as a reward for learning to tie their shoes independently and a display to recognize their accomplishment.
I teach full-day kindergarten at an elementary school in Spokane, Washington. Many of my students live in poverty and have experienced trauma. I am challenged with meeting the diverse academic, social and emotional needs of my students.
My kindergarten students are learning to be self-motivated, lifelong learners capable of a variety of skills that are important for future success in school and life.
It is important that my five and six year old students are accomplishing age-appropriate developmental tasks and milestones.
My Project
In kindergarten, we are not only working hard in the content areas but on developmental milestones as well. By reading Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes and creating a Pete the Cat shoe tying display, children will be more motivated to practice and learn to tie their shoes. Providing students with the opportunity to earn shoelaces after being able to successfully tie their shoes independently will create a fun and engaging learning opportunity where students feel motivated and excited to practice this challenging skill.
Shoe tying is an important developmental milestone.
With its ability to teach children to problem solve and to persevere through practice, encouraging independence in self-help skills such as this are an important part of an early learning environment.
