I teach a special group of students. Some of these kids have attended school in the same building together for a decade! They all feel very comfortable around each other and that lends a good environment for trying some creative projects. I hope to encourage that comfort level and push the students to try new things, even if that means a few mistakes will be made.
This area does not offer many other opportunities for students to interact with each other in a positive way.
Most activities offered for students in this neighborhood are through school clubs and sports teams. I would like to use my music classroom as an environment in which the kids can feel unique, important, and empowered. These are invaluable characteristics for students. I hope to encourage each child to explore their full potential.
My Project
Middle school students can do anything they put their minds to. They are at a place in life where "finding" oneself can be quite difficult. For many, it is a time when a passion for music is discovered. I can say this with confidence because I found that love when learning how to play the clarinet in 6th grade.
I believe that learning to play the guitar will be a valuable skill that my students can continue to develop after middle school.
Our school is quite small and does not have a band or orchestra program, but I still believe that these students deserve the chance to learn how to play an instrument. Many use music as an outlet for emotion, simple enjoyment, and some may even develop their skill into a future career in the music industry. Purchasing new guitar strings through this project will encourage my students and show them that music is valuable!
