This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our middle school is a "Leader in Me" school. We are teaching students leadership skills that will empower them to become successful leaders in their community and school. Our school is also a title one because all the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
I teach ten amazing middle school students with special needs.
I have three students with Autism, one student with multiple disabilities, five students with mild/moderate disabilities, and one student with Down Syndrome.
My students are very energetic and they are very eager to learn new academic skills. My students love to conduct science experiments. I teach my students multiple subjects because they require more individualized and group instruction.
My Project
My school participates in the Accelerated Reading program and each nine week students are given a reading goal to reach. At the end of the nine week, students are recognized at a school wide pep rally for achieving their Accelerated Reading goal and they are given a free dress day and prize .
My school library does not have a wide selection of elementary books for my special needs students.
My students are reading below their grade level. A limited selection of elementary books make it very difficult for my students to participate in the Accelerated Reading program at school.
I need new books to set up a classroom library for my special needs students to improve their reading skills and to help my students to reach their accelerated reading goal for each nine week. A classroom library will help students to have a variety of books to read and students will be able to sit and read book independently.
My students also need new books to increase their reading fluency, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills. The new books will improve my students' social skills because they will engaged in paired reading. The new books will help my students to read more and help to create a passion for reading.
