Grit Across the Globe: An Account of the Holocaust
My students need Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, author of Making Bombs for Hitler, to Skype our class. After months of reading this novel, my students' reading interests have been broadened and their lives have truly been changed.
Low socio-economic status. At risk of not graduating high school. English as a second language. English Limited Proficient. Special Education. Gifted and Talented. Advanced. Two-Way Immersion Dual Language. My sixty-two students come from a variety of backgrounds; we are truly a diverse population. Some of my students are even labeled multiple of the above.
My goal is to change the often broken conditions my students come from and provide an atmosphere of engagement, motivation, increased comprehension, and differentiation of student needs.
School is a safety net for many of my students because their conditions at both home and school make it difficult to learn. A large population of my students will never have the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum, so I want to bring it to them.
My Project
This project will cover the cost of having Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, the author of 'Making Bombs for Hitler', Skype with our class for an hour. She will discuss how she grew up as a young reluctant reader, how she taught herself to read, and why she writes the genre of books she does. Ms. Skrypuch will then discuss her novel, the writing process, the history behind it, and hold a question and answer session.
Ms. Skrypuch will discuss the GRIT she used to transform her life as a reader and writer, GRIT her characters display throughout such an impactful novel, and mentor my readers and writers!
My students and I have spent months reading a mentor text - Making Bombs for Hitler by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch. This extraordinary novel follows a young girl's survival in the Holocaust. We have used this novel to teach figurative language, character roles, author's purpose, descriptive writing, the elements of plot development, and so much more.
However, my sixth graders have learned far more than the objectives that Texas requires of them. My sixth graders have learned the true meaning of grit and perseverance. They have learned about a vital event in history, how it changed the entire country, and what lessons they can take away from it. My students have learned to be passionate about reading through this novel. My goal is to surprise my students with this Skype visit to teach us in person about her story. This will make our novel come alive!
