Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a very diverse group of students ranging in level from college prep to general. Many of my students see college as the light at the end of the tunnel, while others struggle to see the light at all. Each and every one of them deserves an enriching high school experience and I strive to provide it for them.
My freshman integrated science classes come every day with a look that is a mix of excitement and fear, questioning nearly everything.
It is with these students that we have the chance to hook them on science from the moment they set foot in out door. We have built and expanded class offerings that will challenge these students on their four year high school journey.
My general level junior and senior Earth science classes are a tough crowd. They struggle every day to stay on task, many struggling to even make it to school. Many of them take care of little brothers and sisters, some even working jobs to help their families survive. These students are our greatest challenge, we could lose any one of them with the slightest misstep. It is these students that benefit most from your program.
My Project
It is often hard for students to see a purpose in science and its connection to other subject areas. In Earth science we learn about processes within the Rock Cycle and how all rocks originate from the molten materials within the earth and are changed and recycled through different sections of the cycle. One of those processes is weathering, breaking rocks and even mountains into tiny pieces of sediment.
With a rock tumbler and grinding media my students will be able to simulate the process of weathering to grind and polish a rock of their choice, revealing the beauty hidden within, producing a piece of natural art.
I still remember to this day the first rocks I polished leading me to a life long interest in science and geology. I hope to instill this same passion in my students.
