This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I work in an inner-city classroom in Rochester, NY where the poverty level is 95%, which comes with many challenges on a daily basis. Many of the students that come to us are 1 year or more behind grade level. Often times the children's exposure to real life situation is limited. Our district is often lacking in extra funding for individual classroom enrichment. Each year the fifth-grade students come to me excited and eager to explore unknown topics and experiences. It is my hope to foster this love of curiosity by​ developing a reading corner in where I can begin to make many of these experiences come alive through literature.

My Project

The beanbag chairs, floor pillows, area rug, and the lamp will promote an engaging area for students to read and explore literature. It will allow them to have flexible seating and a comfortable area to explore literature. Getting students excited about reading will help promote literacy for the many students I have who are below grade level as well as those students who look for motivation in increasing their on or above leveled skills. Being able to display new and engaging literature opens the students' curiosity on a daily basis, which i​n hopes will increase their desire to learn.
