Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third-grade kids are simultaneously learning the arts of English and Spanish. Dual language programs are common and successful across America. However, my students' struggles are quite unique.
Imagine trying to learn when you feel hungry and anxious.
A good number of my little ones are not yet taking full advantage of the classes because they spend half of their time trying to find a way to deal with anxiety and behavior issues.
Despite all their needs, they show up every day, working to the best of their abilities. My students are eager to learn despite their disadvantages.
My Project
My students fell in love with Greg, the main character in this book series. Third graders usually struggle when it comes to increasing their reading stamina.
Recently, they discovered Jeff Kinney books translated to Spanish.
Since I do not own enough books, they've been creating their own reading groups to share the four books I currently own.
I am sure my native speakers will be thrilled to have more variety and my Spanish Language Learners will be thankful to have more options to increase their stamina during their free reading time. I believe everyone deserves access to a well nourished library, and to read more of what they like.
