Our library serves about 325 students with the majority coming from low-income families. We encourage our students to use the library as a major resource and they take full advantage. Between checking out books, taking tests, and coming in to relax with a book, there is always something going on.
Our students are driven.
Our district and community are dedicated to ensuring equal opportunities for all students. We have resource teachers to help students on an individual basis. Our school has a program that provides food for the weekend for families that may struggle to get the nutrition they need. Many of our families struggle on a daily basis even with the support of local churches and our school district. But our students will not be held back by adversity. They care about learning and doing well in school. They understand the importance of doing their best. Based on our demographics, we are the highest performing urban school district in our state. Regardless of demographics, we are in the top third of all districts in our state. Our students are determined and our faculty and staff are devoted to providing the best possible education for them.
My Project
There is always a buzz of activity in the library, but we want to take it to a new level. The Maker Movement has been going for a few years and we are ready to jump on board. If we receive the requested items, our students will have entirely new opportunities. The iPads, stands, and green screen will be available for all students, grades K-5, but will be most utilized by our third, fourth, and fifth graders. They will be able to create book talks, Maker Space promotional videos, clips to use on our district website, introductions for school-wide assemblies, science fair presentations, and much more. The projects they create are only limited by their imagination. The items will be housed in the library with the option for teachers to check them out for their classroom or to send students to use them with supervision. Our students will learn important skills in the use of tablets, as well as how to prepare speeches, lines, etc. and present them with confidence.
Donations to this project will give our students opportunities they would not otherwise have.
They have not grown up with much, if any, technology in their homes. Having the chance to use these tools in school will give them confidence as they continue to grow in their abilities. They will develop real world skills that will carry with them throughout their lives.
