My students need an OPCOM Farm GrowWall to engage in a long-term investigation to help them understand the Living Environment Regents course; biochemistry (pH level, photosynthesis), nutrients cycle, genetic variation and evolution, etc.
My students are smart and hard working. They come from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. They work together collaboratively and learn from each other inside and outside the classroom in order to help each other to exceed in the field of science.
All my students are young scientists that need to be challenged more.
All of my eighth grade students take the ninth grade Living Environment Regents course and they sit for the Regents in June, regardless of their prior performance in the science during sixth and seventh grade. They love to challenge themselves and work hard when there are engaged in hands-on labs and projects-based learning.
My students enjoy laboratory experiments. However, they wish to delve deeper and have richer experiences in order to connect and visualize what they read in their textbooks in order to solve real-life problems.
My Project
I am going to use the OPCOM Farm GrowWall to create a long-term investigation that will help my students to connect their theoretical understanding of scientific concepts to the real world.
My students will investigate different approaches to growing our food in urban areas through using hydroponic methods vs.
using traditional farming methods. This will help them to visualize how their food grows in urban areas and will encourage them to build a model of their own hydroponic system on various scales (in test tubes, in jars, in a fish tank, etc.). In addition, this investigation will illustrate genetic variations within a population, carrying capacity, nutrient cycle, biochemistry (measuring pH level, nutrients etc.), as well as evolutionary relationships between different plants.
