Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students come to Knudson Middle School from a variety of backgrounds and interests. We are an urban, Title I school, with high numbers of English language learners and students who qualify for free or reduced school lunch. We are also the oldest magnet middle school for the arts in the Clark County School District. Our students come to us from across the valley to study clarinet, dance, violin, choir, video production, mariachi, ballet folklorico, and more!
Our students excel in science as well as in the arts!
We have won second place for the last two years in a row in the Southern Nevada Model Bridge Building Competition at UNLV. And our students' Science CRT scores consistently score among the top five magnet schools in the district, performing better than many of the STEM-themed magnet schools.
My Project
We need a timed misting system to improve irrigation as well as temperature and humidity control in our new greenhouse. Additionally, a turf floor and growing trays and pots will allow us to improve access and overall functioning.
Students love gardening, and this project will extend their growing season.
Multiple grade levels will be able to address more standards throughout the year with this project. Moreover, having a greenhouse will allow us to grow vegetables and fruits like watermelon that have a longer growing season that we could not otherwise incorporate into our current outdoor garden. We intend to use the greenhouse to grow plants for experiments in photosynthesis, investigations in pollination and plant reproduction, as well as investigations into genetics using Wisconsin Fast Plant kits.
