What makes my students special is that they have chosen the rigorous path to college; however, life has thrown many difficult obstacles in their way. When they should be focused on ACT scores, GPAs, and earned college credit, they’ve had to focus on social distancing, quarantining, virtual classes, and last but not least the destruction of Hurricane Ida. What makes my students unique is that they live in one of the hardest hit areas that experienced winds of 150 miles per hour, and what I love about my students is their desire to return to a world of education and normalcy.
My Project
Since returning to our classroom home, students have noted the bare walls with something less than affection. To add not only a splash of color but a sense of home, we will be surrounded by faux greenery that gives us a sense of nature inside our classroom. Students can enjoy a welcoming environment rather than a constant reminder of a storm that devasted their lives. Furniture pieces are both functional and homey to take the place of damaged countertops and cabinets whose doors do not open because they sit right on top of the floor since detached from the wall. I look forward to no longer feeling stuck in a classroom that is less than comforting and barely functional.
