My students need K'NEX Exploring Wind and Water, Snap Circuits Green Energy, and the Wind Power Science Kit to learn about effective green energy strategies and technologies.
My students represent a wide variety of demographics economically, racially, and in regards to learning needs. 25% of our kids are 504/IEP. We are located in an area where the average household income is 100K + our kids are 30% free and reduced lunch.
This school is a fairly new one in an area where lots of parents are looking for options to both challenge and support their kids.
Many come here for more individualized service while others need genuine IEP/504 support. Our finances are limited due to NC policy of keeping 30% of funds for student in their local districts. We are investing in more essential learning support materials.
We are starting an Engineering program, and our kids are excited about it. Some are involved in after school academic programs investing 200+ hours after school to compete. Some can certain go find materials they need for building and engineering project but most cannot and do miss the best learning opportunity due to a lack of materials in the classroom. This challenge makes it much more difficult to meet the needs of our kids.
My Project
Students need to learn about energy consumption and production with accurate tools and real world examples. There is a need for students to personally experience the data as it relates to the green energy movement being promoted in schools and media.
The tools of this project will give students hands on experience with methods of green energy production and real world applications of meeting energy needs with green energy technology.
Each tool would play a role in helping kids build a skill set of understanding electronics functionally. They also will learn to demystify energy from an elementary schema to practical applications as they work in our engineering program to appreciate the role of problem solvers in our very near future. This is an important task to master.
Snap Circuits green will allow them to build functional circuits with measurable output. T& K wind kit allows kids to build generators and analyze data with local wind patterns. K'NEX green will allow the to penetrate the mysteries of wind and water energy production with realistic simulations and actual data to compare to energy needs. The P4400 and the DMM give the kids a chance both at home and in school to accurately measure energy use and production to equip them to use actual data as they propose a green energy solution for the Piedmont of NC area.
