Help me give my students the servo motors they need to build challenging paper mechatronics designs that they will power with Arduino microcontrollers. The Microbits enable my mainstreamed special education students to participate in the same projects.
Challenging. Resilient. Curious. Hard-working. Cheerful. Energetic. Creative. All of these words describe the students in my Engineering classes. They speak more than 8 different languages at home, from English to Tagalog, from Yurok to Vietnamese, from Arabic to Hmong and other related ethnic Chinese dialects. 72% will be first generation college students, over 60% are eligible for free/reduced-price lunch fee.
These students will rock the future, as entrepreneurs, designers, and engineers!
They are choosing rigorous, college-prep Career Technical Education (CTE) elective classes because they are exploring the tremendous opportunities possible in STEM - by taking engineering and computer science classes. Many low-income students are underprepared and lack the experiences and role models that typically inspire students to pursue STEM careers. They don't have the technology and supplies that many typical college-bound students access through their families. Classroom supplied tools and materials are essential in closing this gap.
My Project
Paper Mechatronics immerses students with hands-on Making, where mechanical design, electronic engineering, and computational thinking are combined with traditional papercrafting. With gears, cams, rack and pinion gears cut from recycled cardboard and mat board, students use servo motors to design and build mechanical devices like Blooming Flowers! Diving Birds! Flying Pigs! Students are introduced to programming by using Arduino microcontrollers to drive their mechanical designs; my special needs students will be able to fully participate in every aspect of this project, by using the simpler Microbit microcontrollers. Using fully recyclable, low cost materials make for an all-around eco-friendly, user-friendly experience!
