I have many diverse students from all types of backgrounds and family dynamics in my classroom. These kiddos are my rays of sunshine. I tell them every day, "I believe in you!" Some of my second graders have graduated out of the ELL learning program, but I still have many others working their way to new languages. The cultural backgrounds of my students are so varied that we are truly a melting pot. We have Native American, African American, Somali, Korean, Hispanic, Caucasian, and many others in our class. This year we have many more girls than boys.
Family dynamics are different for every student.
Just as some are with both mom and dad, some are in the custody of other family members; some are floating from home to home due to being homeless, and some students only have one parent or grandparent that looks after them. There are students that are the only child in the home, and there are students that are one of many siblings. Everyone has a different home structure so I try to create a community and a family within the classroom.
My students are creative, inspiring, and intriguing.
My Project
We recently read the stories Stone Soup and Stone Garden. My students were so excited to see how the community was able to work together to create something beautiful out of something that they didn't like. They loved how everyone could work together and help each other.
After we finished our unit, they asked if we could add plants to our class too instead of just having stone walls and plain tables, because that would make such fine Stone Classroom.
There were also requests for flowers, stars, and paint to add more colors like they did in the Stone Garden, "that would really make it world class".
Adding flowers and plants to our classroom will provide additional oxygen to help our thinking, colors to spark interest, scents to calm, and responsibility to take ownership of our learning space.
