Green Chemistry Project 2 - Reusing Plastics For Hydroponics

My students need 33 glue sticks and 12 glue guns to create projects in which discarded plastics can be given new life, for example a home hydroponic unit.

My Students

This project is a continuation of my first DonorsChoose.org project on plastics. The first project involved student-created posters on plastic resin codes. In this project, I would like to challenge my students to create an "upcycling" project with discarded plastic products.

My students attend a Title I school on the Big Island of Hawaii.

It is located in a sprawling rural community in which 70% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 77% of the students enrolled are minorities. Many of our students are taught at a young age to "Malama the Aina" which means to love and respect the land. They are well connected to the land and need to become better aware of the environmental challenges that face them today

My Project

One of these challenges is to reduce the amount of waste that makes it to our landfills, especially plastics since they do not degrade well and pollute our land and ocean. Upcycling projects are a good way of teaching students to keep plastics out of landfills and to reuse plastics that would otherwise be discarded. I would like to plant this upcycling seed in my students by having them create hydroponic units that they can use at home.

To create these hydroponic units my students will need glue guns and glue sticks.

By giving to this project you will not only help my students learn how to "upcycle" plastics but as an added bonus, they will grow edible crops for themselves.
