I have been teaching school for 16 years and one of my favorite things to teach my fourth grade students is the Greek Myths. They absolutely love them. It is surprising and amazing when the children learn the myths, and realize that many modern stories have taken ideas from the ancient myths. For instance, the three-headed dog that guards an entrance in Harry Potter books is actually based on the three headed dog, Cerebes, who guards Hades. It is such a thrill seeing my students excited when they hear the story of Odysseus and the Cyclops, Orpheus going to Hades to rescue his beloved Eurydice, and Perseus fighting the monster Medusa. My class draws pictures and writes their own myths, using the ideas they learn from studying the Greek Myths. They compare the mythology of ancient Greeks and Egyptians, who both believe in the dead traveling to the afterworld in a boat going down a river. This really gets their imagination flowing! I would love to have a class set of books for them to read (and look at the pictures of course!). If you could help me purchase a set of books on the Greek Myths I would be absolutely thrilled.
