Remember how books transported your imagination to other worlds as a child? I'd like for my students to have their imaginations transported into the world of Greek mythology through the reading of Rick Riordan's "The Lightning Thief".
My fourth graders are urban students in a public elementary school in a large city.
My class is multicultural and varies with students of many learning levels. In a time when public education is under fire, my school isn't provided with the funding to keep students immersed in relevant, quality literature. Many of the books we read come out from funding provided by the teacher themselves. In order to create a quality reading and learning experience for my students, I'm requesting a class set of books to teach with a consistent manner that allows students to discuss and share the attributes of the literature.
My Project
Copies of "The Lightning Thief" will allow me to connect literature to social studies through an unit of study on Greek mythology introduced through the shared class reading of the novel. Students will utilize the reading material to practice important literacy skills and to build upon ideas around mythology. This will allow students to connect ideas between classical mythological literature and a more modern take on Greek mythology through the use of "The Lightning Thief".
This project is important to keep our successful Reader's Workshop program flowing, a program that allows our students to be quite successful on state literacy exams.
We want to keep fresh literature pouring into our reading program and to use that literature to build the foundation of skills and strategies that all great and critical readers should possess.
