My students need 28 copies of the book "Greatest" by their favorite author, Walter Dean Myers.
I have the privilege of teaching 8th grade Language Arts in a diverse, disadvantaged school. I have been selected to teach on an "intervention" team next year with our school's most difficult students, and I am looking to raise my game to meet this challenge.
Non-fiction is traditionally the hardest unit to teach. Kids get bored. The texts are dry. Ultimately, what should be the most important part of the year results in students who fail to get excited about a skill they will need for the rest of their lives.
"Greatest: Muhammad Ali" chronicles the life of one of the most important Americans of the last century. Reading about Ali is a gateway to discussing important issues, to learning about standing up for what you believe in and most importantly, how to be the greatest. Couple Ali's story with Myers, the students favorite author, and you have a perfect combination!
By helping me with this project, you can help my students become savvy readers of non-fiction. This skill will be amazingly important as they move forward in education and in their careers. Please! Help me resuscitate this unit!
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
