Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach third grade in a low-income school, and more than half of my students are learning English as a second language.
So many of my students are struggling with learning a new language and learning to read and write in this new language.
They do not have English language models at home, so many of my students need to be given all of the tools they require for language acquisition during the school day. My students try so hard in school every day to do their best work, and I want to ensure that I have the best materials with which they can work. Many of my students do not consider themselves to be readers or writers when they first enter my classroom, and it is my mission to make sure that they do by the time they leave.
My Project
Part of my strategy is to give them the opportunity to accomplish things that they never thought were possible. One of those accomplishments is writing a five paragraph essay, something all of my students will do in both Spanish and English. To achieve this, my students need to access to a computer for research purposes, and then again to be able to write. (We use google docs, as this is what is used at the middle and high school level in our district). Unfortunately, we do not have enough computers for all the students to do this work. Currently, we share a class set of computers between three different classrooms. While this is workable in theory, in practice many of the computers do not work, and often the ones that do are needed for testing. As a result of these constraints and limited resources, I would like to have a class set of ChromeBooks. These computers would be used in our classroom daily, primarily for research and writing.
My students, their families, and my community trust me to provide my students with the best education possible.
I take my responsibility very seriously, but I cannot do it alone. I need your help. I need high-quality resources to provide top level instruction. Together, we can ensure that all students succeed.
