This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Fifth grade is the time that you start to dig deeper into your learning. My students are doing just that. When you enter my classroom, you will see my students engaging with one another in their learning. They are sharing new tips and strategies with each other and they are constantly asking questions.
My 5th graders are hungry to learn more.
They are constantly reading in their free time and are always asking for new book recommendations. They love suggesting books to each other and they organically have book discussions. When they find a particularly good book, it gets passed around from kid to kid until almost every student in the room has read it. Their love for reading and learning is seen every single day in my classroom.
My Project
My students love to read. They beg for silent reading time. Many of my students do not have access to the public library or the ability to purchase books. During the school year they have access to my classroom library so they can borrow books to read both at school and at home. However, when summer comes, most of them lose access to books and reading. My goal is to provide books for them to not only read over the summer, but to keep and build their own personal libraries with.
That is where the Great Summer Reading Bookshop comes into play.
In the past I have been able to give my students 5 books each to build their personal libraries and read during the summer. These books are are a variety of reading levels and genres so each student can find books that interest them. I am fortunate enough to work in a school where 6th grade is still in the same building. I have seen the positive impact that these books have had on their return to school as the learning gap that happens during the summer has greatly decreased. Even their teachers have commented how they come back more prepared and ready to learn as they have spent the summer reading. I want to continue this tradition in giving my 5th graders books as their end of year gift. They are able to pick books that are interesting to them which encourages them to read over the summer. I want to foster their love for reading while keeping them more prepared for middle school and helping reduce the summer slide.
