I can still remember the first book I read that excited me.
As a teacher, my goal each year is to expose my diverse third grade students to different genres and get them excited to read.
My students need high-interest fiction and non-fiction materials that interest and intrigue them.
Each year so many diverse learners walk through my classroom door and they are always eager, hard-working students.
They also come from many different countries and speak many different languages. Some of my students are autistic, English language learners, and/or have learning disabilities. At this age, it is amazing to watch how much they grow and learn and these books will nurture my students' curiosity.
I am requesting 25 copies of "Frindle," 25 copies of "Stone Fox." and 20 subscriptions to Scholastic News magazine.
These books are very readable for my wide range of learners. The only problem my students will face is having to choose which book to read first!
The Scholastic News magazine will nurture my students' curiosity and open the door for further inquiry. This exposure to non-fiction text will help them develop and answer the "W" questions.
As we sit in small groups and discuss our books, my students will flourish as readers, and more importantly, they will develop a true love of reading and learning.
Asking questions about the world around us isn't new for my students but at this age students are able to read non-fiction text and comprehend the meaning better.
