Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My passion is science. I feel like I have instilled a love of science in my students with our monthly STEM design challenges. These materials will allow me to create mini design challenges for my students.
My students come in every morning wanting to learn something new.
They question the science behind what they learn and want to discover it for themselves. Many come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and don't have the resources they need at home. Many are also learning English as a second language. No matter what the challenge is, they are always willing to learn.
My Project
My students need science manipulatives, building bricks, playstix, pipe builders, crystal climbers, and bristle builders. I want to create mini design challenges for my students. I will give them a problem or scenario and they will have to use these materials to solve or create a solution. The students will either work in small groups or pairs and be given a container of manipulatives to work with. One group will get building blocks, one group may get the star builders, and another group with get the waffle builders or slot-a-shape builders. Each group will have different materials so that each solution is unique. The challenges won't just be about a product, the students will then have to justify what they made and explain their thinking behind it.
My students already think of themselves as scientists.
This project will help them think of themselves as engineers as well. I can't wait to hear the scientific discussions that will go on when they explain and justify their thinking.
