This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is located in the inner city of Milwaukee. We served approximately 250 students in grades K3 thru 8th grade. Our students often do not have access to the day to day necessities that they need to do their very best.
We know that educating our students starts at home.
Through parenting education classes, aiding in getting our entire school community resources, and working together we will be able to fully help our students to be their very best.
My Project
I am requesting funds to provide supplies, books, workbooks, food and coffee to parents during school events. Our school has historically had very low parent involvement in school events. As we are moving forward with becoming a trauma sensitive school, involving and supporting community is a large focus. In addition to regularly scheduled open houses and parent teacher conferences, we are planning parenting seminars, family nights, and drop in times for parents to get help with finding jobs and resources they may need. We found through our last two parent events that having food and other supplies has helped to bring in many more parents.
We are enhancing a resource center for parents to aide them in becoming the great parents we know that they already are.
These supplies will make the center a welcoming environment that will draw parents in and make them want to stay.
