This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching at an elementary school in southwest Washington, D.C. We are a Title I focus school. We have some truly phenomenal students at our school who come to school each morning full of energy, questions, and wonder. They are truly amazing humans and deserve all necessary support to meet their goals.
I am making a shift in our classroom to some project based learning and independent study.
My students are going to be studying geography for the first time and are going to have to build landforms. Since this is their first time with geography, I want it to come alive.
My Project
In our geography unit, students will be studying landforms. Since this is our first time studying geography, it is important that it comes to life and is a memorable experience.
At the end of the unit, students are going to have to make an island that includes 5 other landforms on it - they get complete creativity to name and design their island.
With these materials, the island will actually be a 3-D structure, instead of being contained to a piece of paper.
I completed a project like this when I was in elementary school, and I still remember the project. I made Gemstonia - an island that had landforms named after different gemstones. There were Opal Mountains, Ruby Caves, and Sapphire Falls. I loved this project, and I want my students to love geography.
Students will build their island out of model magic on the wood base, then will paint over it.
