Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a resource teacher for some amazing English Language Learners in grades 3-5. My students are at various stages of literacy proficiency, but they all work hard every day to improve their reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.
My students are hands-on learners who benefit greatly from visual supports.
They appreciate opportunities to engage with learning materials that are interesting, challenging, and designed to supplement their academic growth. As their teacher, I appreciate all contributions that are made toward creating an enriching learning experience for them.
My Project
I work with many of my students in a small groups setting with other students who have a similar level of reading ability in English. Book clubs are a great way to get students excited about reading and discussing books with their peers. These graphic novels are a great resource for my students, who benefit greatly from visual supports in text such as illustrations.
Additionally, the books are written at a difficulty level that is challenging, but not overwhelming for students.
These graphic novels will really help my students to read and understand interesting stories that may otherwise be beyond their grasp. Additionally, they will serve as great topics of conversation as we continue to increase our English conversational abilities. I have no doubt that giving my students access to these great graphic novels will result in great reading gains!
