Our students are excited about learning, and we want to channel that excitement toward their reading! Our students come from many different walks of life, and we firmly believe each and every one of them can fall in love with reading if they are given the opportunity.
At our Title I school, many children are not exposed to reading for pleasure at home, and my goal is to help create a classroom environment that changes their perceptions of reading; they will begin to see reading as a form of entertainment and a lifelong pastime.
My Project
I'm requesting graphic novels, award-winning chapter books, and highly popular nonfiction books to add to our classroom library. I want my fifth graders to have easy access to books they'll fall in love with.
With your support, I envision a reading area full of books that are visually appealing, high level reading, and that students feel excited to explore and share.
My goal is for my students to be more engaged and enthusiastic readers. In particular, I want my “reluctant readers” to look forward to reading as a special activity in an inviting environment. By providing students with these books that are tailored both to their interests and to our fifth grade curriculum, I really believe all of my students will be able to identify themselves as "readers."
I know my students will feel enthusiastic about a variety of engaging books including graphic novels and nonfiction. These books fly off the shelves of our schoolwide library, so I want my students to always be able to grab the books they love by increasing my classroom collection. I know how transformative it can be to fall in love with a book, and I know these books will offer that chance to my students.
