Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade at a Title I public elementary school in Orange County. A majority of our students are English Language Learners. Many students are well below grade level for reading but have a desire to be readers and improve.
Poverty is an issue that many of my students face.
Over 90% of the students at my school receive free lunch, and many are homeless.
While my students' parents have the desire to contribute to my class and want what's best for their child, they are financially unable to help me.
My Project
Students in grades 2-6 come to check out books from my class library before and after school and at recess. Often, these students are reluctant readers and also struggling readers. Many are several years behind grade level in reading.
Offering easier to read, graphic novels to students not only helps them fall in love with reading, but helps them improve their reading levels too!
Struggling readers don't want to read "baby books", so I've selected the most popular graphic novel titles such as "Zita the Spacegirl", "Smile", "Babymouse", and "Captain Underpants". These books are series, so when students enjoy book one, they are likely to keep reading and finish the entire series!
