Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 7th and 8th grade students in a Self Contained Autistic class. My students work very hard every day to learn life skills that will help them live as independently as possible outside of school.
My students are incredible; they have accomplished things that many adults that do not face the challenges they do have not accomplished.
They have learned to shop, plan and cook meals for themselves. Gardens have been planted to support the business they have created. The students are most proud of their participation with the on campus restaurant they run. From materials to the books, the preparation to the service, they do it all. They are an inspiration to anyone that comes to see them in action!
My Project
My students run an in school Bistro for staff as part of their development of life skills. This includes going shopping at a local supermarket with a list to compare prices. When preparing soup and grilled sandwiches, students currently wear a variety of different aprons that have been donated. The wearing of the same apron will give students a uniformity of dress as would be required in the workplace. At the Bistro, staff may get a delivery or "dine in" our classroom for their lunch. With the aprons, customers would know exactly who the staff is and be able to ask them for assistance.
Aprons will help our cooks stay clean and give our waiters, bus people, and delivery people a professional appearance.
Our students work on life skills daily, and this weekly Bistro gives them the opportunity to show off their skills while interacting with adults
