Our students come to us from a variety of ethnic cultures. We serve a population of students with over 40% coming from low income, socioeconomic backgrounds. Our middle school serves over 1200 students.
The students of our area have endured a traumatic school year following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey last year which destroyed homes, damaged properties, and left many students displaced.
We are Texas Strong, and we are a community that sticks together and helps our fellow neighbors and friends. Our students continually give back to the community through service learning projects. They work hard to provide food, clothing, and toys to those in need, to clean up our roads with trash pick up, and to perform music concerts for our local retirement home.
My Project
The 2018-2019 school year will involve 180 students in Foods for Today classes as well as Introduction to Culinary Arts classes. The desperately needed chef hats will be used in the classroom and for special culinary events. These hats will help students keep their hair up and safely and contained for better food handling practices.
We know that with great cooking we will also need to teach students how to properly handle food so they will produce a lifetime of safe food handling habits.
With the instruction of a professionally trained chef, the students will learn how to become a chef by practicing safe knife skills, food safety, and preparing foods using a variety of cooking techniques.
This class will be preparing middle school students to enter high school with enough knowledge, experience, and confidence to join the existing culinary program and be on their way to becoming a professional chef.
There are many events that our culinary students will be involved in this next year. The students will be in food competitions such as a chili cook-off and the build-a-gingerbread house challenge. They will also be catering for in-house school events. Our students will be delivering cookie grams to the staff and teachers. Students will take raw products and create amazing masterpieces. They will learn how to not only cook the foods, but package, market, and deliver the finished products.
Our students will not only look like a chef, they will act like a chef. This will set the tone for their possible professional culinary career.
