Great Books Make Great Readers

My Students

My students come to me with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of them speak English in their homes, but many do not or speak another language in addition to English with their families.

Many of the families served by our school face economic hardships but their children come to school every day excited and eager to learn.

We are a low-income school with many students at risk for academic failure. We have a high percentage of students receiving free lunch and the mobile food pantry comes to our school once a month. Many of the economic hardships my students face have been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

My Project

The best way for children to become good readers is by reading a lot. When children enjoy reading, they will choose to read more and become better readers and more prepared for their futures. As I build my classroom library with a variety of genres and literature styles, I can connect my students with a wide selection of books, creating a greater opportunity for students to find books they love.

Reading about others experiences and trials can help children deal with problems and stressors in their lives.

Children have a lot of stresses right now, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and reading quality literature can help them navigate this difficult time.
