Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the past four years at my school, each group of my students have amazed me with their humor, their honesty, their fortitude, and their optimism. Each year, almost all of my students enter my classroom with little English and little previous schooling. Most of my students' parents are immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and the Middle East who are so supportive of their children's education. However, many these families have little in the way of monetary or time resources to dedicate to school. Many of the parents work 6 days a week to support their families. Many of them did not have the opportunity to attend school themselves past the fourth or fifth grade.
In spite of these obvious limitations, our classroom community of students, parents, and teacher has always been one that is full of joy, learning, and growth.
Students and families learn about American culture and education, while teaching each other and me about their own home communities, languages, and culture. My students achieve so much in a year, and can teach and learn even more with the right resources!
My Project
The best way to foster a life-long love of reading is to get kids started early with books that grab their attention and that they want to return to again and again. And again! And again! These books are the ones children beg to read out loud, read independently, and share with friends.
Not only do these books help students to love reading, but they also teach them crucial skills like sharing, dealing with big emotions, and how to be empathetic.
After we read these books together as a class, we talk about how the characters in the books make choices to better the world around themselves.
Kids love to look through books, retelling the story, pointing out details they have noticed or making up their own story to go with the pictures. This is so important for their learning - it increases their comprehension and thinking skills and cements their self-identity as readers. Early access to high-quality reading materials will help my students' love of reading thrive and teach them important life skills!
