Our students come to school eager to begin their day with me! Our school is a small neighborhood school, with a variety of economic and ethnic backgrounds. Over 75% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast each day. Each year, we usually have multiple students who receive backpacks of meals to take home with them over the weekend.
Despite the economic hardships that our children have and though many of our families don't speak English, our students come to school excited to learn and happy to be there!
Each year, my students come to school eager to learn to read. They love to pour over their books, finding "snap" words (high frequency words) and letters that they know. They also love seeing animals, activities that they like and characters that they recognize from other books. They also love using their "Super Reader" power strategies to help them figure out unknown words, patterns in stories and snap words in context.
However, many of my books are in poor condition or outdated.
I would like to replace these books with new fiction and non-fiction books that are more relevant for the students in my classroom community. These books would go into each child's independent book bin, where they will use them to practice the skills and strategies I teach in class and help them grow as readers as well as life long learners.
