Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have incredible, enthusiastic young people who truly need support at school to be successful and do their best! Our school believes deeply in teaching the whole child and the classroom is the first step for our kids to learn about the larger world. With COVID-19 and the impacts it has had on student learning, every way that we can reach our kids becomes more important.
This has been an incredibly challenging year and anything we can do to increase involvement for our kids has incredible impact - great stories, and reasons to talk about them, have really had my kids socializing.
We live in a high-needs New York community where a larger percentage of our school's population are English learners and considered "economically disadvantaged." In spite of the obstacles in their lives outside of school, my students are always eager to learn and I strive to create an environment in which success through continued education becomes achievable.
My Project
My students need quality books and graphic novels to motivate them to read on their own and to discuss with other students.
Since the start of the COVID pandemic and our changes in learning, one of the best and most successful things I have done is to give my students stories and to help them to speak to each other about great reads.
Shared reading, book reviews, discussions and online chats about stores have been an amazing way for my kids to actually speak to each other, whether they are learning remotely or at school. Providing students with reading options in an organized library is one of the most powerful tools that I can give to get them excited about independent reading time while giving them high-quality stories.
I hope that these books and graphic novels will help capture students' interest and draw them into the world of reading. And when they can hear what other have to say about them, I hope that they will read more and join the conversations themselves.
