Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 27 energetic, thoughtful, and curious 5th graders! The majority of them come from low income households and many are English learners. Most families in our community work in agriculture and some of them are migrant, relocating to follow the harvest during different seasons. They are eager to learn and participate in the lessons I design for them.
I want to instill a passion for reading in my students.
To do this, I select content rich, award winning books that are read as a class. Through collaborative discussions and projects, my students explore important themes and life messages, while reflecting on how these apply to their lives.
My Project
These two novels will help my students strengthen their reading skills while they learn important life lessons. "Fish in a Tree" is the story of a child who has difficulty reading. My students will learn about the importance of self-confidence and acceptance of differences in themselves and in others. "One for the Murphys" will teach my students about love, forgiveness, resilience and the importance of family love.
With these books, I will be able to deliver lessons that target literary analysis and character education traits, supporting both academic and personal growth.
These lessons will support students achieve success in their future education, social, and personal endeavors.
