This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a teacher in East Nashville, TN. Our school community is passionate about serving our students and their families. The majority of our students live in or near Cayce Homes, the largest housing project in Nashville. The average income for Cayce Homes is $6000 a year, and 89% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Despite numerous obstacles, my students come to school eager to learn every day. I thrive to create a learning environment that encourages curiosity and where each voice matters.
My Project
Last year, I started book clubs for my third graders. My kiddos loved learning about WWII by reading numerous articles and Number the Stars. The book club became a catalyst for ongoing conversations about race, civil disobedience, loyalty, friendship, family, bravery, and standing up for what you believe and the people you care about. I would love to continue these book clubs this year. Catwings, The Most Beautiful Place in the World, Because of Winn Dixie, and Esperanza Rising are the four books that I have carefully chosen for my students. I would welcome and love any support you could give!
