My students need sets of the NC Children's Book Award Jr. books as well as some graphic novels featuring classic stories to help them challenge themselves & have fun reading! We need The Trojan Horse the Fall of Troy, King Arthur and more.
My upper grade students are awesome kids! They are smart, funny and they try to pretend they don't care about reading but they do! Unfortunately, many of them do not have many (or any) books at home to read when they want to. The books that they check out of the media center may be the only non-assignment books to which they have access.
With that in mind, I try to make sure that I provide them with books that are fun to read and also with books that challenge them and help advance their reading ability.
By providing them with resources at school that they can take home and read at their leisure, I am hoping to ensure that they will view reading not just as an assignment or a task, but as an enjoyable past time that they will continue throughout their lifetimes.
My Project
Having quality books in the media center will benefit my older students who may not have reading resources at home yet who have the desire to pick up a book in their free time. Including graphic novels will encourage students who don't want to read 'books without pictures' to give reading a chance.
By providing them with children's book award nominees as well as classic literature (in the form of graphic novels), I hope that my students will have the opportunity to advance their reading ability while experiencing that it is possible just to read for the sheer enjoyment of it!
