My students need fiction and non-fiction texts at their reading level. Books are leveled by difficulty ranging from A-Z, Z being the highest level. In our 3rd grade classroom library, students have a limited selection.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) NEST, Integrated Co-Teaching, Third Grade class, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. The class is inclusive and has four high functioning children with autism. These children are able to access grade level material with the proper supports. The general education students are picked to model social and emotional behavior. Our school itself is nearing the completion of our accreditation of International Bachelorette (IB) status.
The school offers many after-school programs, including violin, cello, drumming, art club, and glee club.
The school's drama department puts on wonderful shows and performances. The school has given our class some books at various levels but the selection any one student has at their particular level is severely limited.
My Project
Attaining more books for our library will be extremely beneficial to the learning processes of our student. Students will be able to choose these books that they are interested in at their particular reading level. Reading a book you are interested in increases your motivation to read. With more books to fill our library, our students will have more opportunities to practice their skills.
Reading books at your particular reading level makes reading enjoyable and avoids frustration.
When students have more books they are interested in and are challenging enough without frustrating them, they can excel in reading! I would love to give my students this opportunity.
