Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students who walk the halls of my school work extremely hard. Many of our students arrive in 5th grade three or more grade levels behind in reading and math. Because of all their hard work, though, they make amazing gains, closing (and sometimes reversing) achievement gaps with wealthy school districts in our state by 7th and 8th grade.
Diligent, curious, and opinionated, my students are the coolest nerds in Brooklyn.
They devour great literature faster than we can stock the library shelves! Last year, multiple students became "Reading Royalty" by reading over one million words by the end of the year.
Throughout the school day, my students prove that they are building the skills they need to be successful in college and in life. Although my school provides a rigorous education, most of my students do not have the same resources that kids in wealthier communities have, so it's vital to teach them to imagine a world beyond their own.
My Project
Our kids have the chance to independently read for 45 minutes a day. In turn, many students grow their reading levels by two or more years by the end of the school year! The biggest challenge is getting every kid a book they love, and that's where this project comes in. These selections of books are by authors who kids love. Once they read one book, kids can continue to explore other books by the same author. Because I'm ordering two or three copies of each book, friends can read the same book together, further increasing their motivation and excitement to read.
Instilling a love for literature is the best way to help kids increase their reading levels, and that's just what this project will do.
The books target reading levels from grade three to grade seven, so there is a book that will match every kids' needs.
Because these books will be part of our school library, they will be read and reread by multiple students for multiple years. This addition to the library will impact hundreds and maybe even thousands of kids.
