Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This group of fourth graders is not just a class, it is a learning community. These nine and ten-year-olds are cooperative, thoughtful, and curious. They work together and help each other on their knowledge journeys. They are playful and witty, coming up with creative ways to find solutions to problems and innovative responses to new information.
As their teacher, I am constantly impressed by my students' background knowledge and inspired by their inquisitiveness.
These are kids who genuinely love learning. Their days in our class are spent making connections, developing ideas, and expanding their interests.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning they come from households that are economically disadvantaged. Located south of downtown San Antonio, our school is not the most picturesque, and our resources are limited. Nevertheless, these students continue to pursue their academic goals and grow, academically, every day.
My Project
The students in my class are authors. During our writing time, they work individually or in groups to create stories, plays, and expository pieces. They eagerly engage in the writing process, prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and publishing their way through to create great work.
These emerging writers need a way to truly publish their works in books and binders that can be placed in our class library to be read and appreciated.
Currently, students' "published" writing is displayed on our writing wall with paper clips. The materials we seek will give students the opportunity to preserve and display their hard work in a better way. With the report covers and binders we'll order, students can display their writing in a professional looking manner and work individually or collaboratively to author books that can be displayed in our library.
