At GRCS we start off every day by reciting our creed and pledge. In a duel class with a total of 41 scholars, our 5th-grade class has a wide range of abilities. As an instructor in a low-income/high poverty school district, my scholars are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my scholars with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My scholars and our classroom are in need of a few essential materials to make our classroom functional, efficient, and most importantly fun!
My Project
In our classroom, we have a wide range of scholars and abilities. We have scholars that range from reading at a C level up to a Z level all in one classroom setting. That's why I want to give them more exposure with informational and non-fiction text. All the books selected are non-fiction/informational text with a wide range of levels and interest for scholars to choose from. My goal in getting the donation of selected books is to encourage scholars to read more informational text.
Why Non-fiction and informational text?
Well, I'm glad you asked! Studies have shown that scholars with more exposure to informational and non-fiction text have a broader vocabulary. Reading informational and non-fiction text has been proven to help develop knowledge in the natural and social world. Reading informational and non-fiction text can give scholars the opportunity to explore their own interest. Reading informational and non-fiction text pushes scholars to take control of their own learning. Reading informational and non-fiction text prepares scholars for real-world reading and college prep. Reading informational and non-fiction text at a young age sets scholars up for future success with more difficult text through early exposure.
As an instructor who believes that every scholar can and will go to college, I believe it is important for scholars to get early exposure to informational and non-fiction text. Early exposure will help develop vocabulary, push scholar-driven learning, and prepares scholars for college and real-world text.
