Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been teaching at this school for 12 years now. Our school is geared towards inclusive classrooms for all individuals whether they are hearing, deaf or hard of hearing. As I have been working in this school, I have been learning sign language to better communicate with students and staff that use ASL.
Unfortunately, many of my students do not have the means to buy even some of the most basic school supplies and I often spend more than my teacher's choice funding on binders, pencils, loose leaf paper, erasers, folders, notebooks, etc.
I'd love to have a classroom full of students whose learning is not hindered by their financial means.
My students are very active, creative and learn well from visual examples and really class work that requires them to move around the room or show what they know on whiteboards. They are very friendly, sit in groups of 4 and help each other throughout the day. I am most excited how my students embrace American Sign Language and use it in all of their classes. That makes ALL of our students no matter whether they're hearing or not feel welcome and like they belong.
My Project
In New York City, students must pass the Algebra Regents exam. They are required to pass this exam to graduate high school. Having experience using a graphing calculator will greatly help many students succeed in passing this exam. Students are allowed to use a graphing calculator on the state exam but since they cost over $100, this is a supply that very few of my students can afford.
I want to teach my students how to use all of the features that this graphing calculator has in order to help them pass the state exam to meet their graduation requirement.
Without practice using this amazing tool, students will not be able to use the features they need to master in order to pass the state exam.
A standardized test should not stand in the way of my students high school graduation. Help my students get the tools they need to be successful.
