Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school mathematics in an urban high school. My students struggle with making connections between different concepts in math. If I were able to display my work on a graphing calculator to the whole class, students will be able to see how graphs, equations, and numbers are all related.
My students are mostly Juniors and Seniors and they are taking Intermediate Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Precalculus, and AP Calculus AB.
I teach in an urban school district in California, and many of my students come from very low-income households. My school has a business and technology focus, so many of my students are interested in pursuing these fields. Mathematics is clearly an important subject to help them realize their goals. My students inspire me every day with their hard work and intelligence.
My Project
Graphing is an essential skill in all types of math class. Students need to develop an understanding of how graphs are visual representations of equations. I can graph equations by hand to show them, but this is time-consuming and tedious, and not terribly engaging for my students. With the graphing calculator I am requesting, I will be able to graph in a matter of seconds what would take minutes by hand. In addition, I can interact with the graph dynamically, zooming in close or way out, tracing values along the graph, solving the graph for specific numbers, change the styles and shading, stretch or flip graphs, and much more. This will help bring the lessons to life for my students and allow me to cover many more examples, reinforcing my lessons and helping my students make cognitive connections.

You will be helping to familiarize my students with information technology. With this projector system, I hope to give my students a more intuitive and deep understanding of mathematics in all of its beauty.
