My students are always looking for new and different ways to learn. Being in a high school, I know that they also want (and need) to learn skills that will help them not just in high school, but also later on in life! We often assume that today's youth has a strong understanding of technology, when in fact, it is almost the opposite....unless it's Tik Tok or Snapchat! So many of my students don't realize that there are many "tech-y" ways to learn their math as well! It never fails - once I introduce them to ways technology can make learning their math easier, they are eager to learn how to use it. Due to being in and out of school from Covid-19, students have so many holes in their math education. Math is an especially challenging subject to work on filling those "holes", as most topics build on others and are intertwined with previous topics. Regardless of the challenges we've been presented with in the past couple of years, I hate to see my students struggling.
My Project
After a couple of years of being in and out of school, our students have gaps in key skills such as graphing. Rather than spending more time reteaching these middle school skills, we can teach them how to use technology! These graphing calculators allow students to deepen their understanding of what the graph is about, rather than get caught up in the nitty-gritty of graphing by hand (and often making simple mistakes), which can be very frustrating. Isn't our ultimate goal, at the upper math levels, for them to understand the use of the graphs and interpret the information in front of them, instead of just being able to draw the graphs?
Getting these new calculators will give students the skills of using technology in order to answer deeper mathematical questions.
There are cheaper versions, but the colored screen and ability to display the table and the graph is an important feature of this model that would be used regularly! This money would fund just a small portion of a class set. A class set would total $5000 so putting a dent in this cost would be wonderful!
