Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the Algebra II teacher at Animo Venice Charter High School, a charter school with approximately 450 students. Once we add grade 12 next year, that number will rise significantly. The Pre-calculus teacher and I are trying to provide graphing calculators for our students because we believe technology must become well-integrated into education if we are to properly prepare our students for a successful future in the Twenty-First century. We believe graphing calculators, along with the graphing calculator projector, will help us engage students and expand their understanding of mathematics in ways we never dreamed.
Our school is in its third year and most of the students have never used - if even seen - a graphing calculator. As a Title I school, most of our students receive free or reduced lunches and purchasing a graphing calculator is simply a financial impossibility. Our thin budget has prevented us from purchasing these calculators so far so I am turning to you now for help. 10 graphing calculators will help us greatly improve our effectiveness in teaching Algebra II, Pre-calculus, and AP Calculus. A mathematics education instructor I spoke to recommended Titanium TI-89 calculators; I'd prefer those but anything you can manage would be appreciated immensely. By graduation, practically every student on campus will have utilized these calculators. I can ensure you that not one calculator will sit in a drawer and collect dust.
Our school believes strongly in the importance of technology in education. We have gone as far as offering a technology course for students and creating an online database for students, parents, and teachers to check student progress and read announcements. The fact that such a school has not been able to purchase graphing calculators for our mathematics classes demonstrates how desperately we can benefit from your donation. Please help our students realize their full academic potential by helping us bring our mathematics education up to date.
